IFIMAC - The Nicolas Cabrera Colloquium with Pablo Jarillo-Herrero | Next Generation Moiré Quantum Matter (2026)
Talk:Professor Pablo Jarillo-Herrero is a renowned condensed matter physicist whose work has fundamentally reshaped the understanding of quantum phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) materials. He was awarded his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Universitat de València in 1999, followed by a Master of Science in Physics from the University of California, San Diego in 2001. He completed his doctoral training at TUDelft in the Netherlands, where he was awarded his PhD in 2005. Following the completion of his doctorate, he joined Columbia University as a Nano Research Initiative Fellow, prior to being appointed to the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008. He is currently occupying the Cecil and Ida Green Endowed Chair in Physics at MIT.
He is currently holding a Distinguished Visiting Professorship at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona. In the context of MIT, he fulfils the following roles: Co-Director of the MIT Quantum Initiative, Associate Director of the Research Laboratory of Electronics, and member of the Executive Committee of the Center for the Advancement of Topological Semimetals. He is also the founder and organiser of the Rising Stars in Physics workshops. These symposia have been developed to provide support to researchers who are in the early stages of their careers. The events are hosted by the following institutions: MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Berkeley and Columbia.
Interview with Pablo-Jarillo Herrero, 18th Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Sciences (2026)
Talk:The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Sciences has gone in this eigtheens edition to Allan H. MacDonald and Pablo Jarillo-Herrero for pioneering the theoretical foundation and the discovery of strongly correlated electrons in stacked twisted monolayer materials.
From his laboratory at MIT, Jarillo-Herrero led the experimental confirmation of the extraordinary behaviour revealed by graphene when two of its layers are rotated on top of each other at an angle of 1.1º. The existence of this “magic angle” had been predicted seven years earlier by Canadian theoretical physicist Allan MacDonald, who gave it its name.
Writing up his results in two Nature papers of 2018, Jarillo-Herrero described how magic-angle graphene can become either insulating or superconducting, and that it is possible to tune its behaviour with unprecedented precision. His contribution became the most cited of the year in all areas of knowledge, not just in Nature but in all the journals within its publishing group. With the technique his team developed, layers of two-dimensional materials can now be stacked at any chosen angle, giving rise to all kinds of novel properties.
His pioneering research kicked off experimental work in a new field now known as twistronics, where superconductivity, magnetism and other properties are achieved by rotating novel two-dimensional materials such as graphene, with potential technological applications.
